Lake Conway Watershed Area

The Lake Conway Watershed Advocacy Group has been meeting for the past two years to improve the quality of the water in Lake Conway, and resolve other issues related to the watershed.  The attached map shows the topography of the land that makes up the “bowl” that is the Lake Conway Watershed.  The second map shows the planning area boundaries of the three cities (Mayflower, Conway and Vilonia) surrounding the lake.

Safe Routes to School in

Safe Routes to School  (SRTS) is a national (and international) movement to create safe, convenient, and fun opportunities for children to bicycle and walk to and from their schools. The program is intended to reverse the decline in children walking and bicycling to schools. Safe Routes to School can also play a critical role in reversing the alarming nationwide trend toward childhood obesity and inactivity. As an additional benefit, neighborhoods with upgraded cycling and pedestrian facilities under the SRTS program are safer and more attractive to the elderly, disabled, and other pedestrians as well.

We are building our new fire sub-station on the west side of the railroad tracks at the site of the old water treatment plant on Easterwood Point Road.   Construction began last week and as you can see from the pictures below things are moving fast. Once the station is completed and with the training that we are receiving along with the mutual aid from other departments, we will see a lower ISO rating that in-turn could mean a drop in your insurance rates.  Most importantly the sub-station will allow a more timely response to those on the west side of the railroad tracks.

The fire district, which encompasses the City and the rural areas, has increased tremendously in population.  The new sub-station will house three (3) trucks (that the City already has); a pumper truck, a tanker, and a brush truck used for fighting grass fires.

Mayflower Remembers 9/11

The City of Mayflower, AR will be remembering and honoring the victims of 9/11/01 by flying the Flags on Hwy 365 and 89 North.

All across America, flags fly to honor the fallen

9/11/01 is a day that will always live in our collective memory.  Nearly everyone can tell you where they were and what they were doing at 8:46am when the first hijacked plane attacked the North Tower at the World Trade Center.  This plane was followed by a second plane attacking the South Tower at 9:02am, a third plane attacking the Pentagon at 9:45am, and the fourth and final plane crashing to the ground at 10:10am in Shanksville, Pennsylvania after hijackers were attacked by passengers.

Like other national disasters and tragedies, the memories of 9/11 are very personal for each individual.  In the hours and days following the terrorist attacks of September 11, people came together in big cities and small towns across America.  They filled churches and baseball stadiums, friends and strangers crying together and honoring the victims.  They flew American flags to show their support for the victims and our country.  Ten years later, we prepare to observe the anniversary of the worst attack on American soil since Pearl Harbor.

Survey for Pine Village Area Residents

The survey we distributed a few weeks ago was to determine if enough residents were interested in obtaining city water. There are approximately 237 residents in the area. The count we have is 38.8% want to have city water, 8.8% said no and 52.4% did not respond. At this time the project has been put on hold due to lack of response from the majority of residents. If you have any questions you can contact Raymond Arnold at 501-470-1818.

Mayflower Teenager gets Recognation

“Mayflower Mayor Randy Holland announced last week that Taurine (Tori) Main, a junior at Mayflower High School is recognized for her volunteer work at the Mayflower Animal Shelter by naming the cat section of the shelter in her honor.  Miss Main was previously named a Mayflower “Outstanding Young Citizen” and is also the 2011 “Outstanding Young Citizen of the Year.”

Miss Main started Paws and Claws Pet Rescue, a service club at Mayflower High School last year.  The club encourages students to go to the animal shelter to clean cages, feed and water the animals, and socialize them to facilitate the adoption process.  The club organizes fund raisers to pay for veterinary care and spay/neuter of the shelter animals.  This year, the club will mentor younger students in the middle and elementary schools.

She plans to become a veterinarian and start a pet rescue after graduation.  She has not yet decided upon a veterinary school but is a scholar, student athlete, and has done some modeling work as well as spending many hours helping the animals of Mayflower and Faulkner County.  She is living proof that one person can make a difference, and you don’t have to be an adult to save lives.”
