Mayflower is celebrating Spring on Friday, May 18th & Saturday, May 19th 

In an attempt to “bring the election to the people,” there will be early voting  in Mayflower this year for the first time.  Early voting will be May 7 through May 18. The hours for voting are 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday-Friday and 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday, May 12th.

The preferential primary election and nonpartisan judicial election is May 22.

The Conway City Council approved two agreements from the Community Development Committee that would use Garver Engineers in the architecture and engineering services for a terminal building at the new Conway Municipal Airport and for surveying that is needed by the Federal Aviation Administration.

The total cost of both agreements would be $152,905, $80,000 of which would come from the City of Conway for the terminal building design. The City of Conway would be eligible for 95 percent of the remaining money from the FAA.

The council passed both agreements 8-0 in order to stay on the path for a 2014 opening date for the airport.

The Conway Municipal Airport will be located about 7 miles from Mayflower.

I would first like to thank everyone that participated in the JBT Fundraiser.  These contributions will allow us to purchase a skid unit sprayer for the brush truck that will be housed at the new sub-station.

Other than a few finishing touches our  new fire sub-station located on Easterwood Point Road is complete.  Those of you who have visited our website at www.cityofmayflower.com has watched the process unfold.  Our pumper truck being housed there has already proven to be invaluable when a fire occurred and access to the main fire station could not be accessed due to a train blocking the crossing.  We are very proud to have such a fine building to help serve and protect those on the west side of the railroad tracks.

Once again the cold season is upon us so please check your heaters and fireplaces to make sure they are clean.  Also important is your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.  CHECK those batteries.  Also using compressed air to remove dust particles from these detectors can prevent false readings and help keep them working properly.

I would like to thank everyone for their quick response to clean up their properties, and for keeping them maintained throughout the year.  There are still some that are being addressed by our department. 

Some of those property owners do not live in our area or they are out of state, so it takes a little more time to get a response.  We do have property owners who are elderly or handicapped and are physically unable to do the work.  So if you know someone that could benefit from your help, be a good neighbor and offer them your assistance.

I am regretful to announce that Mr. Richard Burt, our part-time Assistant Code Enforcement Officer had to retire from his position due to health reasons.  He has been a great asset to this City for the past two (2) years and he will definitely be missed in this department. Advertisement for his position was placed in the local newspaper and a replacement has been selected. I hope everyone will be supportive of this individual.

There are still some residents in our City having yard sales without obtaining a permit.  City Ordinance states that a permit must be purchased before having yard sales, estate sales, etc.  It also provides guidelines to follow regarding proper type and placement of signs advertising the sale.  A copy of these guidelines are provided when you purchase your permit.  Permits can be purchased at our office Monday through Thursday from 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

In the near future, the Waterworks Department will be having some Renovations performed to the north water storage tanks and installing a large transmission line from the north tanks to the south tank.  This renovation project is necessary in order to meet  the requirements of the Arkansas Department of Health Rules and Regulations.  The renovation project is scheduled to start sometime in July or August 2012.

If your water bill appears to be higher than normal, check the leak indicator on the register of your meter.  The leak indicator is a red star on the dial and when checking make sure there is no water being used in the house.  Watch the red star for two (2) to three (3) minutes.  If it is turning that indicates that you have a leak on your side of the meter.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our office for any assistance.

Also with cold weather approaching that means it is time to wrap up and that includes any exposed water lines or outside faucets.  Preventing pipes from freezing and bursting is another way to save on your water bill.

We would like to welcome our two (2) newest full-time officers, Kyle Watkins and Martin “Sonny” Clifford  and our newest part-time officer Rick Pierce to the Mayflower Police Department.  They have been a part of our department for three (3) months.  Corporal Carl Boyce became a member of our department  in August 2010 and Officer Charles Vaughan joined us in November 2010.  I believe all these officers are a good addition to our department. 

Mayflower Police Department roster now consists of six (6) full time, six (6) part-time police officers , and one (1) part-time animal control officer.  We are all here to serve the citizens of Mayflower.  I believe we have made great progress in becoming a more community oriented police department.  I want your police department to be an agency all of you can be proud of.

We are happy to announce that as of this date, drainage improvements and paving has been completed on approximately eight (8) miles of city streets.  Before year end, plans are to complete an additional 1.1 mile of paving which will include  Booher, Riggins, Oak, South Railroad, Wheeler, Garrett, and Fowler.  That will conclude phase one (1) of our paving project.  If your street is one of those recently paved, we hope you are enjoying it.   If we have not yet made it to your street, please be patient.  Phase two (2) of our project will begin Spring 2012.   We would like to thank our citizens for their continued support and patience while we continue to make improvements to your hometown
